“The goal is superior absolute returns not riding the roller coaster of emerging markets.”
Carl Delfeld, Founder & President
Emerging market investing is not a fringe area where you can put 5% of your portfolio in an emerging market index fund or ETF and leave it alone.
It is not just about trying to capture economic growth rates three times larger than in America and Europe or seeking stronger currencies, more fiscal discipline and investing in a rising global middle class.
It is bigger than that. It is our era’s dominant investment theme that cuts across all asset classes.
The world is filling in right before our eyes. Is your portfolio keeping pace?
Sharp improvements in technology and communications coupled with economic market reforms are allowing emerging market countries to close the income gap with the West and this will continue for some time. Emerging markets now account for half of global economic growth, 33% of world GDP, and nearly 20% of world stock market value.
Emerging markets need to be at the core of your global strategy because they can make you wealthy if you properly manage the risk and volatility.
Consider these facts. In 1990, mainland China's GDP was roughly equal to that of Taiwan - now it is ten times bigger. Despite all the progress India has made to date, its per capita GDP is still only about $1,000 with plenty of room to grow.
Of the world’s four most populous nations, three are emerging markets, China, India and Indonesia. The Capital Group estimates that 70% of the world’s economic growth over the next 10 years will come from emerging market countries. Even mega multinationals are targeting emerging markets. P&G now derives 32% of total sales from these markets and this is doubling every four years.
Brazil is now has a GDP approaching $2 trillion dollars, ranking eighth in the world, and just this month was upgraded to investment grade status. Turkey's economy is now the 16th largest in the world - just behind South Korea. Indonesia, the third largest democracy in the world, was up 119% in 2009 alone.
But to successfully tap into these opportunities you will need some sharp market intelligence and an experienced hand to help you manage the risks and avoid the roller coaster ride so common in emerging markets investing.
You need to identify trends, manage the risk, understand the financial economic and political issues that affect these markets.
You need an experienced and independent guide.
While Carl is a confident believer in investing in the theme of Asia & emerging market growth, he has respect for markets, understands the risks and has developed a strategy to deal with it. Riding the roller coaster of emerging markets is not the goal. Superior absolute returns is the mission.
Experience counts and you would be hard pressed to find someone with more than Carl Delfeld.

He is also independent and can make his calls without bowing to corporate pressure or office politics. His goal is to earn positive returns not beat some global index when it is down 20%.
